Unreal Engine 5.2 is the latest version of the popular game engine from Epic Games. It introduces several new features and improvements that aim to make game development faster, easier and more expressive. In this article, we will highlight some of the most notable features of Unreal Engine 5.2 and how they can benefit game developers and creators.
Procedural Content Generation Framework
One of the most exciting features of Unreal Engine 5.2 is the Procedural Content Generation (PCG) framework. This is a new system that allows you to create large and complex game worlds using rules and parameters that you define. The PCG framework includes both in-editor tools and a runtime component, which means that you can use it to generate content both offline and online.
The PCG tools enable you to populate scenes with Unreal Engine assets of your choice, such as meshes, materials, foliage, lights and sounds. You can also use custom assets or import assets from other sources. The PCG tools allow you to control various aspects of the content generation, such as density, distribution, orientation, scale and variation. You can also use logic nodes to create conditional rules and dependencies between assets.
The PCG framework is especially useful for creating large open-world games that require a lot of content and variety. You can use it to create realistic landscapes, cities, dungeons, forests and more. The PCG framework can also help you optimize your game performance by culling or streaming assets based on distance or visibility.
The PCG framework is an experimental feature that will be further developed over future releases. You can enable it in the project settings and start using it in your projects.
Substrate
Another new feature of Unreal Engine 5.2 is Substrate, a new way of authoring materials that gives you more control over the look and feel of objects used in real-time applications, such as games, and for linear content creation. Substrate replaces the fixed suite of shading models with a more expressive and modular multi-lobe framework that provides a greater range of surface appearances and a wider parameter space from which to work.
Substrate is especially powerful for describing layered looks, such as "liquid on metal" or "dust on clear coat". You can use Substrate to create realistic materials that react to light and environment in natural ways. You can also use Substrate to create stylized materials that have artistic effects or unique properties.
To test out Substrate, you can enable it in the project settings. As an experimental feature, it is not recommended for production work yet; feedback is welcome to continue to refine its functionality.
Enhanced Virtual Production Toolset
Unreal Engine 5.2 also introduces new features and enhancements for the virtual production toolset, which gives filmmakers more creative power and flexibility when using Unreal Engine for film and TV production. Some of the new features include:
- A new iOS app for ICVFX stage operations (coming soon for iPad via the Apple App Store) that offers an intuitive touch-based interface for stage operations such as color grading, light card placement and nDisplay management tasks from anywhere within the LED volume.
- Enhancements to Unreal Engine's VCam system that offer filmmakers greater scope for creative decision-making during pre-production. You can now use multiple VCams simultaneously, switch between them easily, record camera movements and export them as FBX files.
- Improvements to Live Link Face app that enable you to capture facial animation data from multiple iOS devices at once and stream them directly into Unreal Engine.
- Support for Apple Silicon devices such as MacBook Pro (2021) and Mac mini (2021), which offer improved performance and battery life when running Unreal Engine on macOS.
These are just some of the new features and improvements that Unreal Engine 5.2 offers. For a full list of changes and updates, you can check out the release notes here.
